Stage 7 · Putting It Into Practice
15 minWhat this is for: Use your 2 focus points in every lesson for three weeks, until it happens without thinking. Once in that time, team teach or watch a colleague.
By the end, you can
- Use your focus points in every lesson until they are automatic
- Learn from a colleague by team teaching or watching
What to do
- Step 1: Use your 2 focus points in every lesson for three weeks, even on a busy day.
- Step 2: After each lesson, a ten-second tally: did I do it, and what did learners do?
- Step 3: Once in the three weeks, team teach part of a lesson with a colleague, or watch them for 15 minutes.
- How you'll know you're done:
- The "I can" check at the end.
Short on time?
Keep the tally. Ten seconds after each lesson is the whole stage on a busy week.
Quick win for your next lesson
Tell the group what you are doing: "I'm going to check everyone's answer before we move on, so keep your boards handy." Learners will help you keep the habit.

There are no right answers here. Honest answers help most.
A teacher's tally shows their focus point in 4 of 12 lessons. It slips most in their busiest group.
STOP: What might be getting in the way in that group?
Dig deeper: Is that the real cause, or a sign of it?
Don't write learners' names or any safeguarding details here. Use the Cause for Concern form (opens in a new tab) for those.
Before you move on
